So, you’re having a baby? Congratulations!

While your head might be spinning about everything you’ve got to do before your little one arrives, you also get to celebrate all sorts of milestones with your friends and family.

One of the best stages to celebrate is the gender reveal - not that you ever need an excuse for a party! This is an opportunity to get your loved ones together and make them part of your journey from the very beginning.

But if you’ve never organised a gender reveal before, or you’re looking to take this one to the next level, where do you start?

Luckily, the team at Bundles of Joy has put together these handy hints to help you host an unforgettable gender reveal party…

1. Book an ultrasound

It *almost* goes without saying, but you can’t have a gender reveal party until you know what to reveal!

Book a scan at around 18 or 20 weeks, when your healthcare professional will likely be able to tell you whether you’re having a little boy or girl.

Top Tip: Why not celebrate your little angel’s first heart beats with Teddy Tastic’s make-your-own Heartbeat Bear? This keepsake captures the moment with a tiny recording device which is then tucked safely inside the teddy for you to play back.

2. Who gets to be surprised?

Who will be first to find out - you or your guests? If you’re in on the secret, you should recruit a couple of friends to help with your party prep.

Or you may opt to have only a very small group of people know the gender, so it’s a surprise for you and the rest of your guests. That takes the pressure of planning off you a bit, as deciding on blue or pink decorations will be up to the lucky few “in the know”.

However, there are plenty of gender-neutral preparations you can help out with, such as…

3. Choosing the perfect theme

While pink and blue banners, balloons, and bunting are a standard choice for gender reveal parties, you can stamp your own personality on it with a theme!

Pirates and princesses is an original take on the pink vs blue theme. That’s not to say girls can’t be pirates - nor that boys can’t be princesses - but it’s a handy contrast. Check out these pirate decorations, to go with some perfect princess treats.

Here are four more of our favourite themes, supplied by our friends at Party Pieces:

Collapsible content

Tropical Tiki

Don your finest Hawaiian shirt and floral necklace, as you prepare to welcome your loved ones to your very own Club Tropicana.

Sip scrumptious sangria (or an alcohol-free beverage, if you'd prefer!) made in a summery Boho spice glass pitcher (£12.99). Serve it up at your very own "poolside" Tiki Hut Bar and complete the look with novelty kiwi-shaped cups, for only £2 each!

Popeye and Olive Oyl

Set sail as one of 20th century’s most famous sailormen and his long-suffering but headstrong girlfriend, with a nautical-themed party.

The costumes are simple - all you need for Popeye is a cap and a pipe, and Olive Oyl just needs a tight ponytail with some big black boots! One day, your little one can proudly proclaim, “I Yam What I Yam!”

Tarzan and Jane

Take inspiration from Edgar Rice Burroughs’ 1912 novel, Tarzan of the Apes, and bring a touch of the jungle to your party.

Pick up a palm leaf paper table cover for £6.99, then match it with exotic eco-friendly paper party plates (8 for £4.99) and top it off with 20 cocktail party napkins for only £3.99.

4. Invite your guests

Make sure all your family and friends can make this brilliantly-themed event by sending out some invitations.

To save on cost and paper, you may opt for online-only invitations.

However, you might wish to give your loved ones a souvenir of the big day, by sending a bespoke decorated invitation. Handmade cards offer an even more personal feel, plus you can add precisely however much glitter or paint you fancy!

5. Plan lots of fun games

In the run-up to the reveal itself, get everyone involved with some entertaining activities.

Challenge your guests to correctly guess the gender of your baby by offering them a prize. As one of your games, get everyone to write what they think the gender is on a piece of paper alongside their name, and put them into separate bowls for “Boy” or “Girl”. Once the gender has been revealed, dip into the correct bowl and pick out a name at random to receive a prize.

Get snap-happy with some photo fun from our friends at Party Pieces. With props to suit all themes, you can set up your own photo booth so you and your guests can capture the moment in style.

Another great way to make limitless laughs at any party is a piñata. But you may want to keep this for the big reveal - more on that shortly…

  • Rounders Set

Rounders is the ultimate outdoor summer game that can be played by the whole family. Whether you're in your back garden or the park, it provides great entertainment.

6. Pick your ideal venue

Indoors or out? At home or at your favourite place - like a local park or restaurant?

Whatever location you choose will serve as the backdrop for your big reveal, in the background of your photos and videos for decades to come!

Choose somewhere you feel happy and comfortable - and, crucially, is big enough to fit all your guests.

7. Food and drink

A vital part of any party is the food and drink. You want to keep your guests well-fed and refreshed throughout the party, so they’ve got plenty of energy to celebrate the gender reveal when the time comes.

You’ll likely be serving up a storm with party tableware, being careful not to give the gender away.

But “gender-neutral” doesn’t mean “bland”. You can create a funky food offering with a great range of unisex party table decorations.

8. Record your reactions

These days, everybody has a Hollywood-quality camera in their pocket. But this is one occasion where you want nearly everybody to be living in the moment.

That’s why it might be a good idea to nominate one or two trusted people to record everybody else’s reactions during the big reveal.

If mum and dad have opted to stay in the dark until the reveal, you may ask the same people who already know the gender to do the recording.

9. The BIG reveal

How will you break the big news?

Will you opt for confetti canons and coloured smoke, or something more low-key like cutting into a cake to reveal pink or blue filling?

There are lots of ways to make a memorable announcement. Here are some of our favourite suggestions...

Collapsible content

Piñata stuffed with pink or blue treats

You and your guests get to smash the colourful piñata open to reveal the coloured clues within.

Banner reveal

Order a personalised banner from Party Pieces, which you can suspensefully unravel to unveil whether it’s a boy or girl.

Powder Canon

These “pop” to release a quick dusting of pink or blue powder. It may be best to do this outside, in case it makes a mess!

Cupcakes or doughnuts filled with strawberry or blueberry jam

A tasty way to mark the occasion. Just make sure everybody bites into theirs at the same time, so nobody has the surprise spoiled for them!

10. Thank your guests

After the party, show how grateful you are to your friends and loved ones for taking part in another key stage of your pregnancy.

Offer them a slice of cake to take home, along with a party bag as a souvenir for them or their children.

Finally…

We hope to have inspired you to host a truly unforgettable baby gender reveal.
